Inktober : A Challenge

Inktober is a popular artist challenge that takes place during the month of October. It's free to participate in, and you can follow along on Instagram or Twitter at @inktober, #inktober, or #inktober2017, to name a few hashtags and accounts. The intent is to build good drawing habits and to become more proficient with ink (no easy task, for me at least).

This is my third year participating in the challenge. The first year was a total flop. I hadn't picked up, I mean really picked up, ink since my college days and I went into the challenge with no direction. I lasted 19 days (if I recall correctly). I was determined to complete all 31 days the following year. I'm happy to say I did! This was kind of a big deal for me because I had never completed any challenge I had set out to do, personal or otherwise. I went with a celestial theme, but didn't plan my entries out ahead of time. This year, I'm on top of it 1000% and made a list of themed prompts for myself to follow.

October of 2017 is "Poisontober". I'm producing 31 drawings all centered around poisonous plants. They'll range from the kill-you-dead variety to the this-is-uncomfortably-itchy kind. So far I've completed Poison Ivy, Death Caps, and Oleander.

What I hope to accomplish with this year's challenge is to reinforce drawing something daily, and adding a level of complexity and interest to my illustrations. So far, I can say I've definitely gotten faster (which is so awesome because I'm such a snail when it comes to finishing drawings and paintings).

If traditional art and ink drawings are your jam, follow me and other artists along on social media! I'm posting on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, but if you already follow me on Tumblr, I'm posting things there, too. I'm using the hashtag "#poisontober" on Insta so pop in there, too.
